Under Operasjon Condor på 1970- og 80-tallet ble politiske motstandere av Latin-Amerikas høyreorienterte diktaturer kidnappet, torturert og myrdet. Operasjon Condor var støttet av USA. Regissør Anna Recalde Miranda nøster opp i de historiske røttene til denne voldelige konflikten. Hun tar oss med på en reise mellom fortid og nåtid, som viser både utviklingen av dagens økologiske krise og hvordan maktstrukturene i Latin-Amerika er de samme i dag som for 50 år siden: Grunneiere og multinasjonale selskaper sikrer sine interesser ved hjelp av politiet og hæren. Kondorens skygge svever fortsatt over det latinamerikanske kontinentet.

Om regissøren: Anna Recalde Miranda er en italiensk-paraguyansk regissør. Hun er utdannet i mediesosiologi fra universitetet i Bologna, og har produsert og regissert fire dokumentarfilmer – som har tatt del i mange festivaler og vunnet flere priser. «Green is the New Red» er tredje del i en dokumentartriologi om history in the making. Den følger «La tierra sin mal» (2009) og «Power and impotence, a drama in 3 acts» (2014).

In the modern history of Latin America, a direct line runs from the anti-Communist repression of the 1970s to the fight against land defenders and human rights activists today. Hundreds of environmental defenders are killed every year, 90% of them in Latin America.

How can people fighting for environmental justice and land rights be better protected against the threat from multinational corporations and governments?

Conservationists are the new enemy of those in power in Latin America. The documentary shows how there is a direct line from the anti-communist repression of the 1970s to today's violence against conservationists and human rights activists.

During Operation Condor in the 1970s and 80s, political opponents of Latin America's right-wing dictatorships were kidnapped, tortured and murdered. Operation Condor was supported by the United States. Director Anna Recalde Miranda unravels the historical roots of this violent conflict. She takes us on a journey between past and present, showing both the development of today's ecological crisis and how the power structures in Latin America are the same today as they were 50 years ago: Landowners and multinational corporations secure their interests with the help of the police and the army. The shadow of the Condor still hovers over the Latin American continent.
