I et land der 11 kvinner blir myrdet hver dag, gjør en ny bølge av feminisme seg gjeldende.

13. mars: Talk after screening. Read more below.

HUMAN Live: Talk after screening - Femicide in Latin America

Femicide: An Escalating Crisis in Latin America

Femicide, or gender-based violence and killings of women, has risen dramatically in Latin America over the past decade, despite significant progress in women's rights. Several countries have passed laws that ensure the right to access to reproductive rights for women and promote gender equality. However, this has not stopped the alarming increase in femicides. According to CEPAL, over 81,000 women were killed in 2021, nearly half of whom were murdered by partners or family members.

Criminal groups, particularly those involved in drug trafficking, also play a key role in this violence. Femicide is often used to control people, intimidate rivals, or claim power over territories, making the violence even more brutal.

Part of the problem, in addition to the perpetrators, is the passivity of the states and the high level of impunity. Many of these murders are incorrectly recorded as ordinary homicides, making it difficult to fully understand the scope of the problem.

Nevertheless, women have fought back in various ways. Feminist movements like #NiUnaMenos, Marea Verde (The Green Wave), and the Chilean performance group La Tesis have been crucial in drawing attention to violence against women. Additionally, there are many feminist organizations and women’s groups across Latin America fighting for justice and equality.

Structural Violence
At the same time, anti-rights groups have increased their hate speech and harassment against women, contributing to the normalization of violence. This has worsened the structural violence that women in the region face every day.

To eliminate femicide, a comprehensive effort is required at multiple levels. This involves strengthening legislation and the fight against impunity, promoting education and awareness, and supporting feminist movements that work for women's safety and rights. Without a global mobilization against this crisis, we risk seeing violence against women continue to escalate – both in Latin America and the rest of the world.

Panel Discussion: Femicide – An Escalating Crisis in Latin America
Femicide remains a critical human rights issue in Latin America, with gender-based killings of women increasing despite advancements in legal protections. Why do these crimes often go unpunished? What structural and societal factors contribute to this crisis? And how are anti-rights movements fueling harmful narratives against women?

This panel discussion will explore these urgent questions, featuring insights from Angélica Cruz Aguilar, director of the documentary Vivas, and Martín Hernán Di Marco, postdoctoral researcher from the CRIMLA project (Crime in Latin America: The Role of Family, Employment, Culture, and the State). The conversation will be moderated by Nora Sveaass, bringing together perspectives on the causes, consequences, and potential responses to femicide in the region.

The event aims to foster dialogue and awareness on one of the most pressing gender-based violence issues today.

This event is in cooperation with Mental Health and Human Rights Info (MHHRI) and The Norwegian Human Rights Fund (NHRF)
