The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo Escena 26

Northern Chile, 1982. In a dusty, hostile mining town on the edge of the Atacama Desert, eleven-year-old Lidia is raised inside a fiercely loving chosen family — a marginalized community of queer and trans outsiders who build their own world alongside the miners who both desire and despise them.

Then a strange sickness begins to spread, and with it a legend: that it passes between two men through a single glance, in the instant one falls in love with another. As fear turns the town against her family, Lidia sets out to learn whether the myth is true, moving through violence, superstition and hatred, in a place where her family is her only refuge and love itself may be the deadliest thing of all.

In his striking first feature, Diego Céspedes reimagines the dawn of the AIDS years as a desert western and a dark fairy tale, somewhere between the excess of early Almodóvar and the cruelty of classic Mexican melodrama.

Winner of the top prize in Un Certain Regard at Cannes and Chile's candidate for the Oscars, it is a bold, tender and defiantly beautiful ode to the families we build in order to survive.
