Twentysix presents itself

Siden 2024 har det Wien-baserte kuratorkollektivetTwentysix arrangert stedsspesifikke kortfilmvisninger. Hvert arrangement er viet én av de 26 bokstavene i det latinske alfabetet, som danner utgangspunktet for programmets tema: (A)rchitecture, (B)iography og så videre.

Til MIRAGE presenterer Twentysix en spesialutgave med utgangspunkt i et tegn utenfor alfabetet, under tittelen (⏯) itself («selve avspillingen»). Programmet samler tre svært forskjellige kortfilmer av Laslo Chenchanna, Deborah Stratman og Apichatpong Weerasethakul og undersøker selve filmseerfaringen. Hva skjer før, under og etter en filmvisning? Hva slags nye virkeligheter kan digitale bilder skape – og under hvilke forutsetninger velger vi å tro på dem?

Etter visningen møter Robert Bergmann og Julian Ernst fra Twentysix Mike Sperlinger til samtale.

Deborah Stratman – Hacked Circuit | 2014 | 15 min

I én sammenhengende, sirkulær kamerabevegelse føres vi inn i og ut av et foley-studio i Burbank i California. Opptaket skildrer arbeidet med å skape lydeffekter, samtidig som det avdekker flere lag av konstruksjon og manipulasjon. Slik synliggjøres både filmproduksjonens vanligvis skjulte støtteapparat og, gjennom scenen filmen siterer – myndighetenes krenkelser av privatlivet.

Laslo Chenchanna – sea of simulation | 2021 | 10 min

Med utgangspunkt i ideen om en materialiseringskjede viser videoen en LCD-projektor som avgir sitt siste lys for å frembringe et utsnitt av simuleringens hav. Verket ble opprinnelig laget spesielt for visning i Helios Cinema, en kino Laslo Chenchanna selv bygget, og betrakter kinoen både som et projeksjonsrom og som den materielle forutsetningen for at bildet skal kunne tre frem.

Apichatpong Weerasethakul – Worldly Desires | 2005 | 40 min

Et par flykter fra familiene sine for å lete etter et hellig tre i jungelen. Om natten oppstår en sang – en uskyldig refleksjon over kjærligheten og jakten på lykke.

Worldly Desires er et eksperimentelt prosjekt der filmskaperen Pimpaka Towira ble invitert til å filme kjærlighetshistorien om dagen og sangen om natten. Fortellingen, Deep Red Bloody Night, ble skrevet av regissørens assistent, som ønsket å vende tilbake til en forbudt kjærlighetshistorie i en mer romantisk fortid. Popsangen «Will We Be Lucky?» uttrykker den skyldblandede friheten som kan oppstå når man rammes av kjærligheten.

Vienna-based curatorial collective Twentysix visits MIRAGE presenting films by Laslo Chenchanna, Deborah Stratman and Apichatpong Weerasethakul to examine the experience of watching films itself.

Synopsis:

Since 2024, Vienna-based curatorial collective Twentysix have been organising site-specific screenings of short films. Each event is dedicated to one of the twenty-six letters of the Latin alphabet, which sets the theme for the programme: (A)rchitecture, (B)iography, etc.

For MIRAGE, Twentysix present a special edition based around a non-alphabetic sign, with the title (⏯) itself (“Play itself”). Bringing together three very different short films by Laslo Chenchanna, Deborah Stratman and Apichatpong Weerasethakul, the programme examines the experience of watching films itself. What happens before, during, and after a film begins? What new kinds of realities can digital images produce – and under what conditions do we choose to believe in them?

After the event, Robert Bergmann and Julian Ernst of TwentySix will be in conversation with Mike Sperlinger.

Deborah Stratman, Hacked Circuit, 2014, 15 min

The circular camera path moves us inside and back out of a Foley stage in Burbank, CA. Its single shot, portrays the Foley process, while revealing multiple layers of fabrication and imposition. In portraying sound artists at work typically invisible support mechanisms of filmmaking are exposed, as are, by extension and quotation, governmental violations of individual privacy.

Laslo Chenchanna, sea of simulation, 2021, 10 min

Following the concept of a materialization chain, the video shows an LCD video projector giving its last light to materialize a slice of the sea of simulation. Initially produced specifically to be screened at the Helios Cinema, which Laslo Chenchanna built himself, the work considers the cinema as both a space of projection and a material condition for the image to appear.

Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Worldly Desires, 2005, 40 min

A couple escapes their family to look for a spiritual tree in the jungle. At night, a song emerges—an innocent reflection on love and the search for happiness. Worldly Desires is an experimental project in which a filmmaker friend, Pimpaka Towira, was invited to shoot the love story by day and the song by night. The story, Deep Red Bloody Night, was written by the filmmaker’s assistant, who wanted to revisit a forbidden love story in a more romantic time in the past. A pop song, “Will We Be Lucky?” , is used to convey the guilty freedom one feels when being struck by love.
