Last Night I Conquered the City of Thebes

On a cold afternoon, a group of young men cross the Portugal-Spain border in search of a set of ancient Roman baths, recently surfaced after years submerged beneath a reservoir. They arrive as if returning from some imagined battle, wading through mud and trading jokes and half-remembered glories. What begins as an ordinary outing slowly turns stranger and more tender.
Other bathers drift in and out — some seeking rest, others play, each surrendering to the warm water in their own way. As the afternoon dims into night, one of the friends finally puts into words something he has carried for a long time.
Gabriel Azorín's assured debut is a film of hushed thresholds: between land and water, day and night, the ancient past and the fragile present. Time seems to dissolve in the steam, as bodies and centuries share the same pool. Even the title holds that double register — a grand, half-joking boast set against the smallness and sweetness of a single shared afternoon.
Sensual, unhurried and quietly luminous, it listens for the things young men rarely say aloud, until only the water and the starry sky remain
