Two teenagers from Mexico City — the privileged Tenoch and the working-class Julio — are left to their own devices one summer when their girlfriends go travelling. At a wedding they meet Luisa (Maribel Verdú), the older, unhappily married wife of Tenoch's cousin, and on an impulse they invent a hidden paradise of a beach — Boca del Cielo, Heaven's Mouth — and invite her to come with them. To their astonishment, she says yes. What follows is a road trip across a Mexico of checkpoints, small towns and roadside shrines: a journey of desire, jealousy and friendship in which the boys' swagger slowly gives way to something far more fragile.

Alfonso Cuarón's Oscar-nominated coming-of-age classic, written with his brother Carlos, launched Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna to international stardom and remains one of the defining works of modern Mexican cinema — funny, frank and unexpectedly heartbreaking, with a quiet offscreen narrator who keeps pulling back to reveal the country moving just beyond the frame.
