About the film

Vienna, 1938: When the Nazi troops march into Vienna, lawyer Bartok tries to escape to the US with his wife Anna. But the new administration has already their eyes on Bartok and he is arrested and taken to the Hotel Metropol, the Gestapo headquarters. As the former asset manager to the Austrian aristocracy, he is to give the local Gestapo leader Böhm access to those bank accounts. But Bartok refuses to cooperate and is put in solitary confinement and put under more and more pressure. The involuntary rebel against the system remains steadfast for weeks, for months, until he happens upon a chess book that could either be his way out or his demise.

The Royal Game is a new, truly cinematic adaptation of Stefan Zweig’s renowned novella that was first published in 1942. The slow mental demise of the protagonist when experiencing the horrors of war is brilliantly interwoven with a game of chess. The film has been praised and awarded for its strong performances by the actors, and big and visceral production and costumes.

Philipp Stölzl (born 1967) is an established film and opera director. He started his career as a stage designer in theatre before moving on to direct advertising films and music videos. Throughout the 1990’s and 2000’s, he has directed videos for artists, such as Rammstein, Evanescence, Madonna, Mick Jagger, and A-ha. As an opera director, he is still closely involved in the stage design and his work could be seen at world-renowned stages such as the Berlin State Opera and the Salzburg Festival. His version of Verdi’s Rigoletto on the famous floating stage of the Bregenz Festival stunned critics and audiences alike. Stölzl’s work in film includes the mountaineering drama North Face and costume drama Young Goethe in Love, as well as the international co-production The Physician.
