«Døgnvake for Gaza II» er en dugnadsbasert, kollektiv performance og installasjon med over 60 deltakere, der lesningen av "Jeg vil være våken når jeg dør. Dagbok fra et folkemord", skrevet av forfatter Atef Abu Saif står sentralt. Dagboken består av 85 dager i Gaza, fra 7. oktober til 30. desember 2023. Vi leser seks dagboktekster på arabisk, sju på engelsk, og de resterende 72 på norsk.

Under lesningen vises videoverket GRAY SEA av den palestinske kunstneren Rafat Asad, underveis i lesningen bygger deltakerne en installasjon i tilknytning til videoverket.

Navnerullen fra «Døgnvake for Gaza» (2023) vil ligge utrullet og opplyst, og publikum kan signere en kondolanseprotokoll som skal overrekkes palestinske myndigheter når krigen er over. Døgnvaken avsluttes med en videohilsen fra forfatter Atef Abu Saif.

Lesningen pågår kontinuerlig fra søndag 6. oktober kl 19.00 til mandag 7. oktober ca kl 16.00. I perioden 02.00–07.00 tar vi et lite avbrekk fra dagboken, og leser to rapporter om situasjonen i Gaza, av kunstner- og forskergruppen Forensic Architecture: «Inhuman Zones» og «Humanitarian Violence».

Døgnvaken livestreames i sin helhet og er åpen for publikum (med unntak av om natten, mellom kl 23.00 og 10.00). Arrangementet er gratis, men publikum kan kjøpe donasjonsbilletter – inntektene går uavkortet til Leger uten grenser sitt arbeid i Gaza.

Prosjektet er initiert av kunstner og oversetter Vibeke Harper, utformet i samarbeid med den palestinske kunstneren Rafat Asad (bosatt i Ramallah) og forfatter Atef Abu Saif (bosatt i Ramallah), og arrangeres i samarbeid med Vega Scene. Arrangementet blir livestrømmet av Thomas Dalby og D-Stream produksjoner.

Manifestasjon

I desember i fjor arrangerte Motforestillinger, Aksjonsgruppa for Palestina og Vega Scene i Oslo «Døgnvake for Gaza». Over 100 stykker deltok i lesningen og nedskrivningen av navnene til de 6 749 menneskene som ble drept i Gaza 7. – 29. oktober 2023. Døgnvaken i 2023 var en markering av at hver eneste av de drepte ikke bare var et tall i en drapsstatistikk, men et menneske med et navn og en historie – umistelig og uerstattelig. Og det var en manifestasjon av sorg, solidaritet og fellesskap.

Siden 1948 har det palestinske folket levd under okkupasjon og apartheid, i flyktningleirer og eksil. Nå gjentas en 76 år gammel historie: Vi er vitner til den nye nakbaen, et direktesendt folkemord, utført med høyteknologiske våpen, laget for å tilintetgjøre. Noen av våpnene og komponentene har norskeide produsenter. Vi vet hva som skjer. Dette fatale sviket vil nødvendigvis få konsekvenser for oss alle.

Hvordan være menneske i en verden som brenner? Med «Døgnvake for Gaza II» ønsker vi å lage et rom for medmenneskelighet og fellesskap, for solidaritet og håp. Gjennom alle tider har mennesket søkt til kunsten og ritualene for å forsøke å finne eksistensiell mening og svar. «Døgnvake for Gaza II» plasserer seg således inn i en flere tusen år gammel estetisk tradisjon, og fundamentet er dypt humanistisk: Vi er i denne verden sammen, det som skjer med én av oss, skjer med oss alle – for det fins ingen «dem» her i verden.

Om forfatteren og boka

Atef Abu Saif ble født og vokste opp i Jabalia flyktningleir i Gaza by. Han er en internasjonalt anerkjent forfatter og dramatiker, og fra 2019 til april 2024 var han kulturminister i de Palestinske selvstyremyndighetene og bosatt i Ramallah sammen med kona Hannah (også fra Gaza) og deres fire barn. 7.oktober 2023 befant derimot Atef seg i Gaza, sammen med den 15 år gamle sønnen Yasser: De skulle på et tre dager langt besøk, men ble værende i 85.

Tekstene i dagboken beskriver på nøkternt, men sanselig vis hverdagen i en krigssone. Den handler om å stå i kø for alt du må ha, om å lete etter signal til mobilen slik at du kan ringe de du er glad i for å høre at de fremdeles er i live, om å hjelpe til å rydde sammen kroppsdeler etter bombeangrep, i ruinene etter hjemmet til naboene dine ... Men den handler også om de fine stundene sammen med venner, om kjærligheten til livet og hjemstedet ditt, og om pågangsmot og livskraft. Abu Saif gir også den pågående situasjonen en historisk kontekst, og hverdagen blir satt i relieff mot et bakteppe som synliggjør at alt dette har skjedd før. Og dagboken gir et krystallklart bilde av hva de menneskene som vi leste navnene til under «Døgnvake for Gaza» i fjor gjennomlevde, før de ble drept.

"Vigil for Gaza II" is a volunteer-based, collective performance and installation with more than 60 participants, where the reading of "I will be awake when I die. Diary from a Genocide", written by author Atef Abu Saif, is the central piece. The diary consists of 85 days in Gaza, from 7 October to 30 December 2023. We will read six diary texts in Arabic, seven in English, and the remaining 72 in Norwegian.

During the reading, the video work GRAY SEA by the Palestinian artist Rafat Asad is screened in loop, and as the days of the diary passes the participants will construct an installation in connection with the video work.

The roll of names of the martyr from "Vigil for Gaza" (2023) will be unrolled and illuminated, and the audience is given an opportunity to sign a protocol of condolence, that will be handed over to the Palestinian authorities when the war is over. The vigil ends with a video greeting from author Atef Abu Saif.

The reading runs continuously from Sunday 6 October at 19.00 until Monday 7 October at approximately 16.00. In the period 02.00–07.00 we will take a short break from the diary and read two reports on the situation in Gaza, by the artist and research group Forensic Architecture: "Inhuman Zones" and "Humanitarian Violence".

The vigil is livestreamed in its entirety and is also open for physical audience (with the exception of at night, between 11pm and 10am). The event is free, but you can buy donation tickets - the fee will be donated to MSF's in support of their work in Gaza.

The project is initiated by artist and translator Vibeke Harper, the installation is in collaboration with the Palestinian artist Rafat Asad (from Nablus, based in Ramallah), and with author Atef Abu Saif (from Gaza, based in Ramallah), and is organized in collaboration with Vega Scene.

The event will be livestreamed by Thomas Dalby and D-Stream productions.

Manifestation

In December 2023, Motforestillinger, Aksjonsgruppa for Palestina and Vega Scene organized "Vigil for Gaza" in Oslo. More that 100 people took part in the reading and writing down of the names of the 6,749 people who were killed in Gaza between 7th and 29th October 2023. The 24-hour vigil in 2023 marked the fact that each and every one of those killed was not just a number in a statistic, but a human being with a name and a history – inalienable and irreplaceable. And it was a manifestation of grief, solidarity and togetherness.

Since 1948, the Palestinian people have lived under occupation and apartheid, in refugee camps and exile. Now a 76-year-old story is being repeated: We are witnessing the new nakba, a live genocide, carried out with high-tech weapons, designed to annihilate. Some of the weapons and components have Norwegian-owned manufacturers. We know what's going on. This fatal betrayal will necessarily have consequences for us all.

How to be a human in a world that is on fire? With "Vigil for Gaza II" we want to create a space for humanity and community, for solidarity and hope. Throughout all ages, man has turned to art and rituals in our attempts to find existential meaning and answers. "Vigil for Gaza II" thus places itself within a several thousand-year-old aesthetic tradition, and the foundation is deeply humanistic: We are in this world together, what happens to one of us, happens to all of us - there is no " them" in this world.

About the author and the diary

Atef Abu Saif was born and grew up in Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza City. He is an internationally recognized author and playwright, and from 2019 to April 2024 he was Minister of Culture in the Palestinian Authority. He lives in Ramallah with his wife Hannah (also from Gaza) and their four children. However, 7th October 2023, Atef was in Gaza, together with his 15-year-old son Yasser: They were initially there for a three-day visit, but had to stay for 85.

In a sober, but sensuous manor, the texts describes everyday life in a war zone. It’s about standing in line for everything you need, about searching for a mobile phone signal to call your loved ones to let them know you're still alive, about participating in collecting body parts after bomb attacks in the ruins of your neighbors’ home ... But it is also about the gentle moments with friends and family, about the love of life and your home, about courage and vitality. Abu Saif also gives the ongoing situation a historical context, and everyday life is set in relief against a backdrop that makes it visible that all of this has happened before. And the diary gives a crystal-clear picture of what the people whose names we read and wrote down during "Vigil for Gaza"(I) last year lived through, before they were killed.
